UPDATE ON THE NITS/LICE – In order to better educate our families and ourselves, we asked representatives from the Douglas County Health Department to come out yesterday. They toured the building and met with our staff. They said that St. Patrick’s School has taken way more precautions than they feel are truly necessary for any school. They did say that the number one thing that we all need to do is educate ourselves and refer families to the Center for Disease Control(CDC) website information on “Head Lice” http://www.cdc.gov/lice/index.html . We decided to take it one step further by requiring all students and their siblings where a nit or lice was found yesterday to be rechecked before they can return to class. If there are any nits/lice found and a recommended treatment has been used, the child must go home and have the nits combed out and the student may then return to school the same day. They will be rechecked. The appropriate treatments are listed on the CDC website. Douglas County Health highly discourages using treatments multiple times or including home remedies that may lessen the effectiveness of the product used initially. The duration of the product’s effectiveness is listed in the instructions. Rechecking every couple days and combing are the MOST effective measures for eliminating this nuisance after a recommended product has been used. Also, adhering to responsible “social distance” is good practice in settings such as sports activities, playgrounds, and slumber parties. To put your minds at ease, out of all the students and their siblings that we checked today, we sent home less than 10 kids for a treatment and/or re-combing. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to email Bonnie Harmon, Epidemiologist from the Douglas County Health Department, at bonnie.harmon@douglascounty-ne.gov or Mr. Ridder at ridderd@stpatselkhorn.org. Thanks for all your patience. Getting our students back to learning is what we are making a top priority!
